Firearm Violence
What is the problem?
In 2021, there were 178 firearm fatalities in Maine.. While the overall rate of firearm fatalities in Maine is below the national average, it is above average in the rate of suicides that included a firearm . Suicides account for 88% of firearm fatalities in Maine.
Why is it important?
The existing legislation limits the possession of firearms for individuals that pose a substantial risk of harm to themselves or others, but it does require law enforcement, a medical professional and a judge to determine that an individual poses a substantial risk of harm. Some individuals are advocating for an Extreme Risk Protection Order policy, which would remove the need for an assessment for law enforcement and a medical professional.
What is the solution?
Extreme Risk Protection Orders could reduce the number of suicides that include a firearm but may not reduce the rate of suicides in Maine.
